2007: Wayne County Community College (WCCC)
The News-Herald on 2/12/1975 ran an article about plans for WCCC to acquire property in Taylor for a Downriver campus. On 2/26/1975, a follow-up article appeared, titled "Farm Will Be College Site" which showed a map of the proposed location.
The article said (quoted here in its entirety): "Six-year-old Wayne County Community College (WCCC) will construct its first building on a farm site owned by a Taylor family for 92 years. WCCC President Dr. Reginald Wilson announced Feb. 21 that a 100-acre Taylor farm has been purchased from Mrs. Emma Sell and her family for the first of five vocational education centers. The site, valued at $1 million by college officials, is located on the north side of Northline Road, west of Allen Road. According to the Taylor Historical Society, the first of four parcels which make up the site was purchased by John E. Sell, the father-in-law of Mrs. Sell, in 1883. Mr. Sell purchased the remaining property in 20- and 40-acre parcels. The site was selected, according to college officials, because of its accessibility to the I-75 freeway and other major thoroughfares. The land purchase came one year after Dr. Wilson's initial announcement of a proposed Downriver building project, made at a St. Patrick's Center, Wyandotte, convocation. At the time of his announcement, Dr. Wilson said the goal of the college would be to have one student enrolled in a vocational or career program for every student enrolled in a liberal arts curriculum.
"According to Dr. Wilson, the new college building is scheduled to open its doors in September, 1977. The Downriver center, which will house approximately 40 vocational education programs, is expected to serve 2,000 students, he said. Dr. Wilson said, however, that the college would not abandon its satellite centers when the new building is constructed. Classes for liberal arts students will continue in St. Patrick's Center, Wyandotte, Riverview High School Center and Taylor High School Center. The college president called the building program "a symbol of unity for Wayne County. By establishing the first core center in Taylor," Dr. Wilson said, "we are showing our intention to serve all of Wayne County." Funds to construct the building were obtained under a $39.7 million bond issue which was awarded to an 88-firm syndicate in October, 1974. A .48 mill tax was imposed on property within the college service district to pay the bond costs. In addition to purchasing the Taylor site, the bond issue will also be used for the acquisition of three additional land parcels for future college buildings. Detroit's Rosary Center also has been purchased as part of the college five-year expansion program. Newly-elected Downriver WCCC Trustee Mrs. Loretta Moore of Lincoln Park said the vocational education center wll provide great economic opportunities for Downriverites. Mrs. Moore said she was pleased that the Downriver area had been selected as the site of the first permanent WCCC facility. She credited former Trustee Ray Mix of Wyandotte with playing a major role in the building program."
