1956-on: Trenton High School
The 1985 city directory states that the school was "built in 1952." According to the book Truago Truaxton Trenton, THS "was opened in 1956, with additions in 1959, 1963, and 1968." The book also noted that "The first principal of Trenton High School was Theodore F. Sundquist" and that "Neil Van Riper was appointed principal following the sudden death of Mr. Sundquist in April, 1962." Van Riper was the principal from 1962 until June 30, 1977 when he became acting superintendent of schools. (See 2603 Charlton for more on Van Riper.)
An article in The Detroit Free Press on August 24, 1952 noted: "Ground is being broken for a new million-dollar high school [in?] the open country out on West Road. It will not be many years until the school is in the center of a highly developed residential area. It takes imagination to be a city planner in the new cities." (The same article notes that "The pleasant meadows west of Fort Street are giving way to rows of comfortable homes.")
The land that eventually became the location of the school had been purchased by the village in 1944. A Trenton Times article of Sept. 26, 1944 notes: "Negotiations for the purchase of additional lands for school purposes adjacent to the Breton Woods Nichols School site will get underway following instruction of the Board of Education School District One (Monguagon Township) Monday night. Following authorization of the district electors at the annual meeting in June, the board instructed Ernest Reider, member, and Jesse L. Anderson, superintendent of schools, to confer on the purchase with Elliott Nichols, owner of the property."
A Trenton Times article on November 10, 1944 followed:
-
"Additional school lands adjoining the West Trenton (Breton Woods) are available for purchase by Monguagon District One, according to a report submitted by Ernest Reider, board member to trustees at their meeting Monday night. Reider said Elliott Nichols, owners of the property had expressed his willingness to sell any additional land needed by the district at $1,000 an acre, the same price as paid for the 15-acre tract purchased some months ago.
"The board indicated it believes that probably the first step in future school building expansion will be the erection of an eight-room elementary school in this area which the district would be able to finance. Such a building would be so arranged that it could be added to and become part of a high school building at some future time, or part of a larger elementary school, whichever seemed necessary. Construction of this building is not being considered immediately.
"Schools are practically at capacity now, but are not crowded. In the post-war period Federal and State grants for erection of school buildings may make it advisable to erect a new building. The probability of a parochial school in this area also will have a bearing on any decision that will be made. The probability is that crowding will first occur in the high school. This might be relieved by housing the ninth grade, now in the high school, in the junior high school building, and part of the Strohm School if the Strohm School was relieved by the erection of a parochial school, the board opinions.
"Trustees are constantly studying all phases of the housing problem and no move will be made until more definite information as to need is available. The board does believe that sufficient property should be acquired now for adequate school plant of the future. Property should be acquired while it is available and before it has been subdivided and cost increased. Such property could always be sold if later population trends made it seem advisable. Money is available in a Building and Site Fund for the purchase of property, but such purchase would have to be authorized by taxpaying school electors."

1975: Superintendent of Schools - Business Office
2007: Neil E. Van Riper Administration Building (Board of Education)
The 1976 book Truago Truaxton Trenton said that the superintendents of Trenton schools were as follows: Jesse L. Anderson (from 1915 to 1947), William C. Taylor (1947-62), Dr. Otto Hufziger (1962-67), Hans Lantzsch (1967-71), Dr. J. Warren Adair (1971-75). The book notes: "Lloyd E. Volk was appointed Superintendent of Trenton Public Schools on January 29, 1975." Prior to that, he had been "assistant superintendent since August, 1968" and had short stints as acting superintendent in 1967 and 1971.
A front-page story in the July 6, 1977 News-Herald said: "Neil Van Riper, principal of Trenton High School, was appointed acting superintendent of schools by the Trenton Board of Education at a special meeting held Thursday" (i.e., June 30, 1977). "Van Riper will replace Superintendent Lloyd Volk, who resigned and whose last official day was Thursday. According to Boyd Arthurs, school board trustee, the board considered members of the school district's administrative staff before deciding upon Van Riper as acting superintendent. .... Van Riper, who has been principal of Trenton High School since 1962, has been employed by the Trenton School District since 1951. .... Prior to that time he served as assistant principal, athletic director and football coach for six years. In his first years at Trenton High School, Van Riper coached football, basketball, baseball, and track, and was dean of boys in the years before guidance counselors became a part of the high school staff. He also taught and coached in Milan, Mich., for two years before coming to Trenton. ... Van Riper and his wife, Betty, are Trenton residents." According to this article (a PDF file), Van Riper "stepped down as superintendent of the Trenton Schools" in mid-1993. "At his retirement party in June, the Trenton Board of Education honored the superintendent by naming the district's administration building the Neil E. Van Riper Administration Building."
A 2004 News-Herald article noted that Assistant Superintendent John Doyle replaced Van Riper as Superintendent of Schools in 1993, until 1997 when Doyle was replaced by his assistant, Donald Kolcheff. Larry Leapley replaced Kolcheff in 2001; Leapley's last day as superintendent was June 30, 2004.
