The Sept. 19, 1957 Wyandotte News-Herald contains a photo and write-up about Westgate. The store was founded in 1950 at 2437 Fort. In 1955, it moved to a bigger store at 2441. The Wednesday, June 12, 1963 edition of The Southgate Sentinel also contains a photo and short write-up about the store: "Anthony Balavitch and his son, Anthony junior, are shown in front of their newly remodeled store -- Westgate Radio, Appliances and Television -- at 2441 Fort, Wyandotte. .... Starting with a 20-foot frontage at 2437 Fort in 1950, the senior Balavitch built a new 35-foot building next door in 1955. Later, he acquired the former building and now has merged the two into a single structure with a 55-foot frontage."

A puzzle: This address, taken from the 1956 city directory, ends in an odd number so it should be on the east (Wyandotte) side of the street. An even number (say, 16000 or 16002) would refer to the SW corner of Fort & Leroy. The 1958 directory lists it as 16100. The problem is the drive-in was located a little further south, at 16300 Fort. One possible explanation is that the drive-in originally occupied this space and later expanded to the 16300 area. Another is that there was a sign for the drive-in on this spot, next to the gas station. Or that in 1956, before the arrival of Marty's Furniture City, there was a way to get to the drive-in from the corner of Fort & Leroy, before Leroy became a distinct road. Then in 1957, after the arrival of Marty's, the entrance was moved further south to 16100. And finally, with the arrival of the present-day used-car lot (i.e., by 1970, likely earlier), that northern entrance was abandoned. Just a guess.

Grand opening was on Wednesday, March 7, 1962 at 10am. The January 4, 1962 edition of The Southgate Sentinel notes: "Construction of a $750,000 Shopper's Fair store on Fort near Pennsylvania is virtually completed and the opening is expected to be announced within 60 days." According to a later article, it was the 32nd Shoppers Fair store in the nation and "the seventh to open in Michigan since October, 1957." The article notes: "The Southgate store encompasses 65,000 square feet -- almost an acre and a half -- of one-level floor space and is flanked by a 340,000-square-foot parking area, with space for 850 cars." There were "12 check out registers near the store's exit." Manager of the store was Martin Soffin.

A 1973 newspaper ad for Sentry drugstore had a drawing showing Chatham closest to the intersection of Fort and Pennsylvania (perhaps close to 16775 Fort), then Korvette's to the east of Chatham, and then Sentry (at 16719) to the east of Korvette's. Sentry was referred to as being "in the Korvette Shopping Center." The Korvette's store closed around 1980 when the chain went out of business, and the building was eventually demolished.
